The Rome EDITION is a remarkable transformation showcasing the elegance of Rationalist architecture, where the facade tells the story of the building. This stunning new venture from The Ian Schrager Company marks the brand's first foray into Italy, with exciting plans for Milan and Como on the horizon.
"The Rome EDITION brings a unique mix of design, culinary and mixology experiences to the heart of the city with a signature restaurant, rooftop terrace and two innovative cocktail bars. There is no place like Rome".
Set in a beautiful, quiet street in the heart of the fascinating historical EUR district - the modern district in the south of Rome - it is hard to believe it is only minutes from the iconic sights of Rome and the throngs of tourists. In a first for the city, the hotel features a sprawling, lush garden that acts as both a piazza and dining area. This private garden is where guests start their journey, unfolding like scenes in a captivating opera. The charming Roman streetscape leads you into the heart of the hotel, creating an open indoor-outdoor space that feels like a vibrant jungle, filled with over 400 plants and cascading jasmine draping the façade, animating the streetscape.
A striking bronze awning extends over teak wood banquettes and chic free-standing furniture, surrounded by a cosy arrangement of lanterns that gives it a warm, traditional Roman garden vibe. The intimate Garden has outdoor seating for Anima on one side and a laid-back all-day terrace on the other, serving a menu of light dishes available until late evening. With a mix of beloved favourites and exciting new creations, the menu is complemented by a fresh cocktail list inspired by the beauty of Italian gardens and the Mediterranean.
The building is truly magnificent. Soaring above, it is perfectly symmetrical and highly striking. The grand central entrance is framed by large, metal-framed windows that allow natural light to flood the interior. Above, a subtle yet stylish cornice adds a touch of refinement. The interplay of materials - smooth stone and polished metal accents - enhances the hotel's contemporary aesthetic while paying homage to its storied past. This inviting exterior captures the essence of Rome's architectural heritage and sets the tone for a luxurious and immersive experience within.
As you leave the garden behind, you enter the lobby at its centre and it's breathtaking - an awe-inspiring monumental space that is completely captivating. As with all EDITION hotels, the social heart of the hotel, The Lobby, sets the tone. This is a show-stopping space with dramatic 22 feet-high (7 metre) ceilings, porous travertine floors, and walls. Two symmetrical seating arrangements are the central axis of the space, while white custom fabric sofas and coffee tables inspired by Manuel Coltri lie next to petrified wooden side tables and standing lamps. The Lobby is EDITION at its most dynamic. It is a place to relax, gather, enjoy, see and be seen, or play pool games on the custom-made table. A curated palette of travertine and luxuriant white linen covers several large, sleek sofas, all symmetrically placed on either side of the room. Bold, saturated hues inject personality and warmth into the space. Vibrant emerald green velvet drapes that connect with the garden are sculpted into perfectly measured folds, cascading from soaring ceilings, and lit from below. Philippe Starck's Rosy Angelis floor lamps are strategically placed for maximum impact and provide a diffused light through a special ultra-lightweight fabric shade embroidered with Starck's signature, aluminium tripod legs in a grey finish. A splash of vibrant orange dazzles from the snooker table, adding a playful contrast. A Salvador Dali chair, at one end, is an EDITION signifier. The room perfectly showcases the architectural characteristics of Italian rationalism, an architectural style inspired by the scale, structure and symmetry of ancient Roman architecture but without the ornamental flourishes associated with the styles of classicism and neoclassicism. Simply stunning.
Everything flows from the lobby, and every corner of The Rome EDITION embodies sophistication while prioritising inclusivity and functionality. The design embraces a neutral, timeless aesthetic meticulously crafted with care. EDITION has preserved the building's original beauty, enriching the overall experience for guests while keeping all the best bits. Original features are retained throughout, including the central courtyards, original statues and lamps, and the stunning central staircase of rare Cipollino marble from the quarries of Apuane.
The Rooms and Suites
The Rome EDITION has 93 rooms, including 17 elegant suites, and 2 penthouse suites, each offering a delightful counterpoint to the dynamic lobby area. Guests are welcomed into spaces featuring muted tones and exquisite detailing. Light floods through the expansive windows with stunning views of the city streets, rooftops, or the majestic Church of San Nicola da Tolentino.
Every room celebrates Italian craftsmanship, featuring custom-made furniture crafted from Canaletto walnut and Peperino stone. Custom bedside tables sit alongside singular Italian artwork that adorns the walls. Each room has a Charlotte Perriand "Indochine" chair, luxurious beige leather and walnut wood herringbone flooring. Oversized beds are dressed in crisp white linens, topped with the signature EDITION champagne faux fur blankets, paying homage to Schrager's grandmother who valued comfort with her beloved fur throws.
The sleek bathrooms radiate a monochrome simplicity. The luxurious bathroom basins are carved from Carrara marble, stylish Agape fixtures and luxurious Le Labo toiletries in the hotel's signature EDITION scent. A commitment to sustainability is woven throughout, with no single-use plastics in sight.
The Neighbourhood
The business district of EUR (Esposizione Universale Roma) is renowned for its monumental Fascist-era architecture. It is one of the most prominent examples of fascist urban planning and architecture in Italy. Mussolini planned to build a new Rome - a majestic and futuristic urban complex created as a symbol of the new imperialist and colonial Rome to host the Universal Exhibition of Rome, which was planned for 1942 but never held because of the outbreak of World War II.
It is also just around the corner from the iconic Via Veneto, famously celebrated in La Dolce Vita during the glamorous 1950’s and 60’s. The Rome EDITION stands as a stylish sanctuary, perfectly positioned near must-see attractions such as Piazza Barberini, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, and the enchanting Borghese Gardens. The building welcomes you with a jasmine-clad outdoor café and restaurant at the entrance, alongside a rooftop pool and bar boasting breathtaking views of Rome.
Anima: A Taste of Tradition
At the heart of The Rome EDITION lies Anima, the stunning signature restaurant is led by Executive Chef Antonio Gentile and offers traditional Italian cuisine with a contemporary and international approach, using seasonal ingredients. It is split into three unique spaces:
The Chartreuse room invites guests to dine on custom white oak dining tables with tulip-brushed brass bases and light oak armchairs in chartreuse velvet. Above each booth, there is a pendant in alabaster by Emmanuel Levet Stenne. The open kitchen in stainless steel and off-white glazed Italian tiles is filtered by an amber glass opening and has a bullnose countertop in white travertine and white oak face.
The Yves Klein blue room is decorated with an abundance of greenery, alongside custom white oak dining tables with tulip-brushed brass bases and light oak armchairs, a custom white oak banquette and rugs in velvet Yves Klein blue. Open-pored travertine French window niches with bronze windows allow guests to look into the dramatically lit garden. A series of eight commissioned blue paintings in the style of Rothko by Johina Garcia-Concheso adorn the walls, along with an antique Louis XV gold leaf mirror and custom Yves Klein blue mirror.
The expansive lush garden serves as both a piazza and dining space, abundant with more than 400 plants and a cascade of climbing plants over the façade. A dramatic bronze metal awning overlooks teak wood banquettes and free-standing furniture along with an Italianate arrangement of lanterns to exude the feel of a traditional Roman garden.
Anima serves traditional Italian dishes with refreshing modern twists. Italian wines take centre stage, paired thoughtfully with diverse international selections driven by the joy of food and emotion.
Punch Room: A Speakeasy Retreat
Step into the Punch Room, a signature bar concept that captures the spirit of prohibition-era speakeasies, closely following the award-winning designs established at other EDITION properties. The dark walnut wood bar, with its Rosso Levanto marble fireplace and custom armchairs in rosewood and dark brown leather, is a place to unwind with friends under low lights. The charm of traditional punches, born in the 17th century, invites one to indulge in exciting concoctions crafted with unique ingredients discovered along historic trade routes. With a dedication to quality and innovation, the Punch Room promises a lively yet intimate atmosphere perfect for enjoying a sophisticated evening out.
The Jade Bar
The swoon-worthy Jade Bar is an intimate mixology destination and an ode to the Roman passion for honouring the finest of nature's offerings. The intimate jewel box-like space has floor-to-ceiling green antique marble picked out with satin brass and gold accents. Guests are encouraged to relax on the emerald velvet banquettes and take in the Jeff Koons-inspired sculptural pieces.
The Rooftop
Located on the seventh floor, The Roof offers unobstructed views across the city skyline and landmarks, including the Pantheon, Acqua Paola Fountain, and Basilica of Sant'Andrea della Valle. The secluded spot features a large bar area, a travertine plunge pool with daybeds in solid oiled teak, and custom bronze metal vases dotted along the outside edge of the terrace.
At The Rome EDITION, every detail is designed to immerse you in a rich experience with history and luxurious style, inviting you to create unforgettable memories in the heart of the Eternal City.
