Golucci Interior Architects’s unique project in Beijing: a fan workshop and retail space located on the historic Qianmen Street, is a project conceived with the aim of promoting and celebrating Chinese fan culture. The resulting space is a beautiful blend of elegance, simplicity, and practicality - much like the fan itself.

Qianmen Street, one of Beijing's oldest hutong areas, has long been a popular destination for tourists from around the world. In recent years, it has undergone a transformation into a commercial district that seamlessly blends elements of the old and new. The fan workshop by Golucci is a prime example of this fusion, representing a modern intervention that respects and honors the area's rich history.

The design concept for the workshop draws inspiration from the history of the handheld fan, an ancient invention attributed to both China and Japan. It is believed that both cultures influenced each other in the development of the fan, and this idea of cultural exchange is reflected in the design of the space. Golucci has cleverly incorporated Japanese-style lines into the structure of the old Chinese building, creating a unique visual language that flows throughout both floors of the interior.

While the design concept is rooted in cultural exchange, the overall aesthetic of the space is one of functionality and simplicity. The use of terrazzo floor tiles and white latex paint, along with practical tool and material cabinets, creates a clean and uncluttered environment that echoes the simple yet practical nature of the fan. The workshop's program is spread across two levels. The first floor houses a small retail area where visitors can purchase beautifully crafted fans, while the second floor is dedicated to the workshop itself. Here, visitors can observe skilled artisans at work and even participate in workshops to learn the art of fan-making.

Golucci's fan workshop and retail space is more than just a shop; it is a modern tribute to an ancient craft and a testament to the enduring power of cultural exchange. By combining traditional Chinese craftsmanship with modern design elements and a Japanese-inspired aesthetic, Golucci has created a space that is both beautiful and functional, a place where visitors can experience the beauty and artistry of the fan in a truly unique setting.
