After two years of consultation, the Fashioned from Nature exhibition, which moved at the end of last year from Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) in London to Shenzhen is in a league of its own.
Co-curated by V&A, China Silk Museum, Design Society and Edith Cheung, this fashion exhibition’s set is a poetic interpretation of the East and West’s views on nature, as well as the evolution from classical through contemporary garden spaces.
The journey begins, leading participants on a path of purity, that slowly evolves to become an unprecedented fashion voyage. From the indoor installations evoking a classical garden and winding through undulating curved arcs and passages, the audience can calmly ponder their inexhaustible relationship with fashion: we see attire that make a satirical statement on fur in fashion culture, Emma Watson’s evening gown she wore to the Met Gala in 2016 constructed completely from recyclable materials, and more than 100 precious pieces borrowed from the China Silk Museum….
As you immerse yourself within these peaceful, otherworldly surrounds, you can reflect on your moral responsibilities, and consider the real possibility of converting to sustainable fashion. Lessons learnt from the past make it clear that what we love should never harm the environment.
